My Initial Experience with CrossFit

Today was another first for me.  Not only did I start this blog, but I did my first CrossFit WOD (Workout of the Day).

A guy I work with has mentioned it to me a few times, and I checked out some of the websites, and I really liked what I saw, so I thought I needed to give it a try.  Especially after seeing that there were only three exercises in today’s WOD, which made me think that I would be getting home a little earlier.

The WOD consisted of 10 Muscle Ups, 100 Push Presses with 75lb. weight, and 1,000 meter row, for time (examples are all over YouTube).  Since I’m also training for the KY Derby Mini-Marathon and the Triple Crown before that, I did a 20 minute run before my WOD.

This being my first workout with CrossFit, I didn’t really time myself.  I have a general idea (20 minutes for just the WOD, an additional 20 for my run), but not exactly.  There were people on the CrossFit website that finished in under 10 minutes.  I didn’t make it that quick.  I couldn’t do the Muscle Ups, so I substituted with some standard dips and weight assisted pull-ups.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to do 75lb. Push Presses 100 times, so I did just the bar, a standard 45lb.  I couldn’t do 100 straight, but I was really happy that I hit that mark.  My shoulders were on fire!  I finished up with the 1,000 meter row, and that took about 5 minutes, with zero additional resistance.

If you’ve never seen CrossFit, these people are extremely fit.  I hope that I can motivate myself to keep up with it for a while, because it was a great workout, even scaling it down as I did.

I knew CrossFit existed, but I didn’t realize the Crossfit Games did, too, until this year. It’s so addicting and motivating to watch. Keep up the good work.

    • I’m still learning a lot about CrossFit, so any tips I’m more than happy to hear. Also, I there’s a CrossFit Games marathon on ESPN2 coming up soon!

I’ll have to set my DVR to record the Crossfit marathon 🙂 I wouldn’t really consider myself a Crossfit “follower,” but I definitely like to pull ideas from their workouts. Just paying attention to when they explain the rules in the Crossfit games seems like a good way to get some good ideas about form and other tips.
